  13. Welcome to the new newsgroup that will center around NewTek Inc.'s 
  14. LightWave3D 3D modeling, rendering and animation packages.  Right now,
  15. LightWave3D is only available on the Commodore Amiga with rendering 
  16. engines available for various MIPS based WindowsNT workstations. 
  17. LightWave3D is used by a wide variety of people for an equally wide variety
  18. of uses.  You'll find the work of talented artists using LightWave3D on such
  19. TV shows as Babylon5 and seaQuest for example.  NewTek intends on releasing
  20. LightWave3D for SGI and PCs running Windows and WindowsNT either by the end
  21. of this year or first quarter next year (1995).

  24. ftp.netcom.com and look for pub/dj/djmccoy.  You'll find directories for
  25. Lightwave and the Video Toaster mailing list archives from over the years.

  53. This unmoderated newsgroup proposed as
  54. comp.graphics.packages.lightwave will be used for the discussion of
  55. NewTek Inc's Lightwave 3D, a 3D modeling and rendering package.  Topics
  56. appropriate to this newsgroup will include but are not limited to:

  58.      * General questions and answers on using Lightwave 3D.
  59.      * Product announcements relating to Lightwave 3D and third party
  60.        products that benefit Lightwave 3D.
  61.      * Rexx macros to enhance Layout and Modeler usage.
  62.      * Optimizing options to get the most out of Lightwave 3D.

  64. As Lightwave 3D is scheduled to be released for Windows, WindowsNT and
  65. SGI platforms by the end of the year, the following topics are examples
  66. of what is not appropriate to discuss in this proposed newsgroup:

  69.        appropriate newsgroups.
  70.      * Lightwave oriented product advertising should be limited to brief

  77. BACKGROUND

  80. In the past, Lightwave 3D was only distributed with the Video Toaster
  81. which limited it's use to those living in countries where NTSC was the
  82. video standard.  However, Lightwave 3D is now also available as a
  83. standalone package for ALL Amiga owners.  In addition, NewTek Inc. 
  84. announced at Siggraph '94 that Lightwave 3D will be ported to Windows,
  85. WindowsNT, and SGI platforms by the end of 1994.  Lightwave 3D is used by
  86. a great number of professionals and hobbyists for a wide variety of uses
  87. and projects.  TV shows such as Babylon 5, seaQuest and RoboCop are
  88. examples of where Lightwave 3D is used.

  94. Currently, there is a mailing list dedicated to Lightwave 3D with a
  95. subscriber base of approximately 500 users with an average of 25-30
  96. messages a day.  Since the release of the standalone version and the
  97. announcement at Siggraph, interest has grown and so has the mailing list.
  98. Due to subscriber responses, it may be appropriate for a new newsgroup to
  99. be created to take the place of this mailing list in an effort to expand
  100. the user base and information sharing on Lightwave 3D.

  102. It has also been expressed by several subscribers that don't have Usenet
  103. newsgroup access that perhaps a mail gateway can be created for access to
  104. this newsgroup.  I am unable to provide such a service, however I would
  105. like to hear from anyone who can personally.
